LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University baseball team will host Austin Peay in an Atlantic Sun Conference series that has been adjusted due to an unfavorable forecast.
Bellarmine (6-18, 2-4 ASUN) and Austin Peay (19-7, 5-1) will meet in a split-site doubleheader Friday, squaring off in the opener at 1:30 p.m. (ET) at Knights Field before shifting to nearby St. Xavier High School for the 7 p.m. tail end. The series will conclude at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Xavier.
Austin Peay is the ASUN Gold Division leader. In conference play, the Governors are coming off a road sweep of Central Arkansas, and they opened league action by taking two of three at home from Lipscomb.
As was the case last season, Austin Peay is a chart topper in the ASUN in most offensive categories, including runs scored (226, 8.7 per game), batting average (.307), home runs (43) and doubles (61). John Bay was voted ASUN Preseason Player of the Year.
KNIGHTS NOTES
• The matchup pits the ASUN's two highest-scoring teams against each other. Bellarmine has racked up 182 runs (7.6). The Governors and Knights are also 1-2 in total hits (267 and 223) and doubles (61 and 54).
• In ASUN play, Bellarmine is coming off its highest-scoring outing of the season after defeating Lipscomb 19-17 in the tail end of last Saturday's doubleheader. The Knights salvaged a win in the series finale after the Bisons captured the first two games, 10-7 and 7-2.
•
Landon Akers enters the series ranked third in the ASUN in hits (36). The freshman infielder has registered multi-hit games in eight of the last 10 contests. He has a team-high 12 multi-hit games this season. Akers batted .438 (7-for-16) with two doubles in the Lipscomb series and is averaging a little over two hits per game in league play (14 hits in six games, .452 avg.).
•
Eli Watson enters the series ranked fourth in the ASUN in hitting (.375), tied for fifth in RBI (22) and tied for sixth in hits (33). The junior outfielder hit .500 (6-for-12) in the Lipscomb series and is batting .458 (11-for-24) in ASUN play.
•
Chase Carver is the probable starter in the series opener. In the first of his two ASUN starts this season, against Eastern Kentucky, the sophomore RHP tossed a career-high 6.0 innings, and his seven strikeouts were one shy of his career high. Carver combined with junior RHP
Oliver Ward (2.0 IP) and senior RHP
Logan Haslam (1.0 IP) for the program's first shutout in the D1 era.
• Sophomore RHP
Zach Horwith, the probable Game 2 starter, fired 4.0 scoreless innings in his start against Lipscomb.
