Softball comes up short in doubleheader at Lipscomb`

NASHVILLE, Tn. – The Bellarmine University softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader at Lipscomb on Friday, falling 8-2 in game one and 10-6 in game two at Draper Diamond.

With the losses, the Knights move to 4-20 overall and 0-8 in Atlantic Sun Conference action.

The Knights got on the board first in game one, scoring a run on a Jacklyn Zuege RBI single in the first inning to go up 1-0 early.

In the second, Lipscomb got to work, jumping ahead to a 2-1 lead with a bases loaded walk and RBI single. The Bisons continued to add on runs in the third and fourth innings, scoring two and three runs, respectively, to extend their lead to 7-1.

Bellarmine got another run back in the fifth. With two outs in the frame, Erica Endris entered the game as a pinch hitter and promptly blasted a solo home run to cut into the deficit, still down 7-2. For Endris, the homer was not only her first of the season, but the first of her career.

Lipscomb tacked on one more insurance run in the sixth before finishing off the 8-2 win.

In game two, Lipscomb got off to an early start on offense and never looked back. The Bisons took a 1-0 lead in the first and then followed with another run in the second and third innings before breaking the contest open with a four spot in the fourth, taking a 7-0 lead.

The Knights finally answered in the top of the fifth, putting up a crooked number of their own. With one out in the inning, Reni Shemwell stepped to the plate and ripped a double to left center. Entering as a pinch hitter, Lauren Guthrie followed with a walk with Endris drawing a walk of her own immediately after to load the bases. Harlie Bickett followed suit with a walk of her, earning an RBI as a run scored. In the next at-bat, Zuege ripped the second double of the inning, scoring two more runs to make the score 7-3. With two outs, Megan Konermann tallied the third double of the frame, scoring another two runs to put Bellarmine within striking distance, down 7-5.

Lipscomb answered in the bottom of the sixth, scoring three more runs to push its lead back up to five at 10-5.

Bellarmine attempted a rally in the top of the seventh, scoring a run on a Chloe Collins RBI single, but the threat would end there as the Knights fell 10-6.

Up next, Bellarmine will close out its first road ASUN series with a third and final game at Lipscomb on Saturday, March 29.
