LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Bellarmine softball made its long awaited home debut on Friday morning, dropping a 5-1 contest to Ball State at Knights Field.
With the loss, Bellarmine moves to 4-8 on the year while the win improves Ball State to 9-6 overall.
The Cardinals jumped out to an early lead, scoring a run after taking advantage of two Bellarmine defensive errors in the top of the first.
Ball State added three more runs in the second courtesy of an RBI double and two-run home run.
In the home half of the inning, the Knights finally got on the board. After a quick first out,
Nicole Waters got things going with a single to right field. In the next at-bat, Waters took second on a wild pitch to get herself into scoring position before moving to third on a ground out. With two away,
Jadyn Thompson came through with an RBI single to right, cutting into the deficit to three, down 4-1.
Ball State added a final insurance run in the fifth, extending the lead back to 5-1.
The Knights tried to mount a comeback in the final innings but were unable to get much offense going, falling 5-1.
Up next, Bellarmine will continue its home stand on Saturday, March 8 against Stonehill College.
