CONWAY, Ark. — The first ASUN Tournament win in program history was bound to be memorable.
But the Bellarmine University women's basketball team made sure it was flat-out unforgettable.
In a season stuffed with unprecedented Division I-era accomplishments, eighth-seeded Bellarmine added its latest history-making feat in instant classic fashion Friday night at the Farris Center, as senior guard
Hayley Harrison buried a game-tying 3-pointer to force overtime, where the Knights prevailed 80-79 over seventh-seeded Jacksonville in the first round.
Bellarmine (18-14) avenged a first-round loss last season to Jacksonville (14-17) — and did it despite a monumental 39-point performance from ASUN scoring champion Edyn Battle. However, it was the Knights' refusal to allow Battle to attempt the last shot that preserved the landmark win.
Coach
Chancellor Dugan's squad advances to meet two-seed and host Central Arkansas at 7:30 p.m. (ET) Saturday in the quarterfinals.
Harrison had a rollercoaster of a game. The senior guard scored eight points early in the contest but missed much of the second quarter after picking up her second foul and then a significant amount of the third and fourth periods after being issued her fourth foul not far into the second half.
She more than made up for her extended absence. Harrison re-entered with 6:31 left in the fourth and scored seven points in the period, the last on a 3-pointer just ahead of the buzzer that sent the game to overtime.
In the extra session, Jacksonville took a 79-78 lead on a pair of free throws by Battle with 19 seconds left. On the ensuing possession, Harrison was pitched the ball by senior forward
Skylar Treadwell near the top of the key and started to drive. She employed a hesitation move near the free-throw line that duped her defender and then burst to the rim for a go-ahead layup through contact.
Battle got the ball in her hands near midcourt with about 11 seconds remaining. She penetrated toward the right elbow but was swarmed by four Knights. She couldn't pierce through the barricade and retreated toward the top of the key, where ultimately she was forced to pass to Priscilla Williams, who missed a contested runner as time expired, igniting a frenzied celebration by the Knights.
Senior guard
Hope Sivori drilled six 3-pointers while scoring a team-high 24 points for Bellarmine. Seemingly every time Jacksonville threatened to take some control of the fourth, Sivori answered with a triple or, in one instance, an old-fashioned three-point play after a steal. The Dolphins had a four-point lead with 45 seconds left in regulation when she drained yet another timely trifecta.
Fifteen of Harrison's 23 points came in the fourth quarter and overtime, when she had to be highly cognizant of playing with four fouls. Senior guard
Ashlee Harris and junior guard
Miyah Brown chipped in 10 points apiece.
Including the ASUN Tournament, Bellarmine took two of three meetings this season with Jacksonville, all hotly contested.
