Softball splits home doubleheader with Central Arkansas

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Bellarmine University softball team returned to Knights Field for another home ASUN series, splitting a doubleheader with Central Arkansas on Saturday.

The Knights opened the day with a 19-5 loss in five innings before bouncing back with a 2-1 comeback win to end the day.

Game one started with a quick first inning before Central Arkansas let loose and put up 12 runs in the second. The Bears continued with another four runs in the third before adding two in the fourth and one in the fifth.

Bellarmine strung some hits together in the home half of the third to put up five runs, but the damage was already done.

Senior Reni Shemwell led the Knights with two hits in the game, including a double.

The second game of the day was much more of a pitcher's duel.

Bellarmine had a chance to put a run on the board in the first with the bases loaded and no outs, but nothing came of the threat.

Central Arkansas struck first in the fourth inning thanks to a sacrifice fly to go up 1-0.

The Knights once again had action on the bases in the fifth, but a long pickle play ended the inning with no runs scored.

After another scoreless defensive frame, Bellarmine was finally able to answer with some runs in the bottom of the sixth. Senior Erica Endris led the at-bat off as a pinch hitter, drawing a walk, followed by two more walks of junior Madison Davis and freshman Lauren Guthrie to load the bases with no outs. Senior Kayla Bauer stepped to the plate and drew the fourth straight walk to bring home a run, earning an RBI while tying the contest 1-1. In the next at-bat, fellow senior Harlie Bickett flew out to right field, deep enough for Davis to bluff the run home to draw an errant throw from the outfield, allowing her to score and put the Knights ahead 2-1.

Grad student Kelsie Houchens went back to the circle in the seventh and sat the Bears down in order to secure the win. Houchens turned in her second complete game effort in as many outings, tossing 7.0 innings while allowing just one run on three hits with three walks.

The Knights move to 6-25 overall and 2-12 in the ASUN after today's results.

Up next, Bellarmine will conclude its series with Central Arkansas on Sunday, April 13 at Knights Field.
