Baseball sweeps ASUN doubleheader against North Alabama

Knights rally from 9-1 deficit in tail end, win on Case walk-off RBI single

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University baseball team clinched its first Atlantic Sun Conference series victory of the season by sweeping a Sunday doubleheader against North Alabama by scores of 5-3 and 11-10, with the latter featuring a comeback from a 9-1 deficit at Trinity Stadium.

GAME 1: Bellarmine 5, North Alabama 3
Exceptional pitching and a dominant performance by senior Casey Sorg at the plate fueled the win in the opener for Bellarmine (8-22, 4-7 ASUN).

Sophomore right-hander Chase Carver tossed 6.0 splendid innings, allowing one run — none earned — on three hits while striking out four and collecting his second win of the season. Carver retired the last nine batters he faced against North Alabama (8-20, 5-6).

Senior right-hander Blake Donnan notched his second save of the season after tossing the final 3.0 innings and fanning three.

Sorg launched a solo homer in the first and a two-run shot in the eighth, blasting one from both sides of the plate for the switch hitter. The latter — his fourth of the season — proved to be invaluable insurance, boosting the lead from 3-1 to 5-1 before North Alabama scored twice in the ninth.

Sorg, who went 3-for-3 with a walk, also had a hand in Bellarmine's two-run sixth, following a single by junior Milto with a double off the wall. Junior Eli Watson drove them both in with a single up the middle for a 3-1 lead.

GAME 2: Bellarmine 11, North Alabama 10
Bellarmine completed the doubleheader sweep in improbable fashion, rallying back from a 9-1 deficit in the seventh inning.

Each team had one massive frame that, in essence, canceled the other out. North Alabama racked up seven runs in the fifth inning while Bellarmine piled up eight in the seventh. The squads provided a great deal of help to one another with control issues being a major factor in both big innings.

Ultimately, the contest was tied at 10 after nine innings. In the bottom of the 10th, freshman Christian Kiper led off with a walk and advanced to second on a one-out infield single by freshman Landon Akers. Kiper then trotted home with the winning run when senior Jackson Case roped a walk-off RBI single to right center.

Junior Luke Scales, senior Jacob Rowold and junior Charlie Rife opened the seventh with consecutive singles, the latter forcing a pitching change and the exit of starter Anthony Pingeton, who was largely outstanding.

North Alabama's relief was plagued with control issues. Four of Bellarmine's eight runs in the seventh were forced in either by walk or hit by pitch. In addition, Akers cranked a two-run single to the left-field wall that was close to a grand slam, and Rowold knotted it at 9 with a sacrifice fly.

A throwing error allowed the go-ahead run to score for Bellarmine in the eighth, but a wild pitch by the Knights enabled the tying run to score for North Alabama in the ninth.

Senior right-hander Cooper Hellman registered the win after firing the last 3.0 innings. Junior right-hander Cole McMichael hurled a scoreless inning of relief.

The series finale is set for 11 a.m. (ET) Monday at Trinity Stadium.
