LOUISVILLE, Ky. — If it meant beating No. 21 Louisville, senior
Jackson Case was willing to run through a wall.
And we're not talking figuratively.
On Tuesday night at Jim Patterson Stadium, Case made what will undoubtedly go down as one of the most memorable catches in Bellarmine University baseball history in providing a Hollywood ending to an unprecedented 10-9 triumph over the Cardinals.
The victory marked Bellarmine's first ever over a nationally ranked opponent in the Division-I era. It also represented the Knights' first over a Power Five program in the NCAA's highest level, all in the team's first season under
Ben Reel.
Although Bellarmine (14-38) built a 9-2 lead, Louisville (34-18) rallied back to within 10-9 by the ninth inning. Once there, in the bottom half, Kamau Neighbors smacked a two-out triple over Case's head in center field.
The Knights veteran refused to let that happen a second time.
The following hitter, Lucas Moore, launched a deep fly ball to center. On his horse, Case raced back to the warning track and made an electrifying over-the-shoulder catch before slamming into the wall for the final out.
Fellow senior
Casey Sorg, who had earlier delivered his own dazzling highlight with a moonshot of a home run, was sprinting over from right field and greeted Case with a chest bump. The duo was soon joined by their equally exuberant teammates in celebrating the milestone win.
The foundation for the upset started to build in the third inning. Trailing 2-0, junior
Eli Watson got Bellarmine on the board by lacing an RBI single up the middle, and the Knights tied it up when Watson and junior
Joey Milto successfully executed a first-and-third play, with Milto scoring the intended run.
Bellarmine then exploded for five runs in the fourth. Senior
Seth Sweet-Chick rifled an RBI single through the left side, and the Knights tacked on another run on the play when the ball was misplayed in the outfield.
Freshman
Landon Akers followed with an RBI single. After Milto singled and Sorg was hit by a pitch, senior
Jacob Rowold clubbed a two-run double in the gap.
Bellarmine expanded the lead in the sixth when Sorg launched a towering, 429-foot homer that appeared to land on the outskirts of the stadium beyond the left-field fence. The two-run blast — Sorg's ninth of the season and third in the last five games — pushed the Knights to a 9-2 advantage.
In one of the best performances of his career, senior reliever
Arren Hash, who earned the win, shut out Louisville from the second through the fifth innings, returning to the mound even when his outing was interrupted by a lightning delay. The Cardinals scored three in the sixth, but junior right-hander
Oliver Ward ended the rally with a strikeout.
Bellarmine's final run — and ultimately the winning run — came in the seventh. Louisville had major control issues in the inning, culminating in a bases-loaded hit by pitch of Milto, who reached base in all five plate appearances after being hit twice, walking twice and singling.
Louisville plated four runs in the eighth to rally within 10-9 before sophomore right-hander
Chase Carver — with a big assist from Case — closed out the win in the ninth for his first career save. Carver has been Bellarmine's Friday starter this season.
With two singles, Akers moved into the program's all-time Top 10 for single-season hits. He's now tied for eighth with 76. In addition, Sorg climbed into the program's all-time Top 15 for career RBI. His 120 ribbies rank 14th.
Bellarmine will host Eastern Kentucky on Thursday-Saturday in its final ASUN series, with first pitches set for 3 p.m. (ET), 3 p.m. and 2 p.m.
