LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Fresh off the most notable victory in Division I-era program history, the Bellarmine University baseball team will conclude the regular season by hosting Eastern Kentucky in an Atlantic Sun Conference series Thursday-Saturday at Knights Field.
First pitches between Bellarmine (14-38, 8-19 ASUN) and Eastern Kentucky (11-41, 8-19) are slated for 3 p.m. (ET), 3 p.m. and 2 p.m. The intra-state rivals will both be looking to end 2025 on a high note in this series as neither are in ASUN Tournament contention.
Bellarmine is coming off indisputably its most prominent win in the D1 era, as the Knights made national news after knocking off No. 21 Louisville 10-9 on Tuesday at Jim Patterson Stadium in their first season under
Ben Reel. The victory was the program's first in the D1 era over a nationally ranked team and first over an opponent from a Power Five conference.
Senior center fielder
Jackson Case's spectacular, wall-crashing catch for the final out against Louisville was featured at No. 7 on SportsCenter's Top 10.
KNIGHTS NOTES
• Bellarmine and Eastern Kentucky are meeting in the second of their home-and-home series this season. The Colonels secured the first in Richmond on March 14 (doubleheader) and 16 (single game), overcoming a 10-0 loss to the Knights in the series opener with 2-1 and 8-7 victories in the final two games.
• Bellarmine is hosting its second straight ASUN series following a six-state, 13-game road swing that included three consecutive conference road series. After nearly a month on the road, the Knights welcomed Lipscomb last weekend, claiming an 11-9 victory in the opener before falling 11-4 and 8-3, respectively, over the latter two games.
• Bellarmine is 7-9 at home this season but played only 11 games at Knights Field. Five contests were shifted to local turfed high school fields due to inclement weather. BU is 5-6 at Knights Field in 2025.
•
Casey Sorg launched a 429-foot home run against Louisville that appeared to clear the left-field seats and may have landed on the outskirts of the stadium. The senior's 28 career homers rank seventh in program history. He's also entered the all-time Top 15 for career RBI, ranking 14th with 120. In the last five games, Sorg batted .389 (7-for-18) with three HRs and 11 RBI.
•
Landon Akers enters the series ranked: second in the ASUN in hits (76); sixth in batting average (.353); tied for sixth in total bases (108); tied for seventh in steals (16); tied for 10th in runs scored (45); and tied for 12th in doubles (14). The redshirt freshman infielder has recorded 25 multi-hit games and is hitting .389 in ASUN play.
• Akers' 76 hits are tied for eighth in a single season in program history (90, by Matt Higgins in 2019, is the record).
• Junior infielder
Luke Scales' 135 career hits rank second in the D1 era, and his 76 runs scored are third.
• Sophomore RHP
Chase Carver, who normally starts series openers, earned his first collegiate save against Louisville after working 3.0 innings. Due to the quick turnaround, Carver is expected to start the series finale against EKU.
• Senior right-hander
Arren Hash tossed four straight scoreless innings — and logged 4.1 overall — against Louisville as Bellarmine's offense made its move on the Cardinals while Hash was quieting their bats. He notched the win, his second of the season.
•
Joey Milto reached base in all five plate appearances against Louisville. The junior outfielder walked twice, was hit twice and singled. Milto carries a team-best .432 on-base percentage and his keen eye has led to 36 walks, which rank fourth in a single season in program history.
• Bellarmine will celebrate Senior Day on Saturday. The Knights will honor Sorg, Hash, Case,
Mike Sokol,
Cooper Hellman,
Blake Donnan,
Seth Sweet-Chick and
Hudson Cornett.
