Field hockey plays App State tight, but falls 2-0

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Bellarmine field hockey team played fringe top-20 team Appalachian State closely Friday afternoon at Trager Stadium. The Knights held the powerful Mountaineers offense, ranked second nationally entering the game in scoring, without a goal for the first 37 minutes before ultimately falling 2-0.

In the first half, Bellarmine (0-8, 0-2 MAC) withstood four App State (7-1, 2-0 MAC) penalty corners and 10 shots, five on goal, but were able to hold serve. Lise Boekaar fired three of ASU's shots and landed one on goal.

Midway through the third, however, App State converted on a penalty corner for the game's first goal after a shot by Boekaar hit off the stick of Ella Bonnell and then went off Kailey Workman's foot and into the cage. The Knights challenged the ruling on the field, perhaps thinking the ball went out of bounds or hit the side of the cage, but the ruling was upheld.

Sophia Baxter would then add some insurance for the Mountaineers on a penalty corner with 12:39 left in the game. After receiving the behind-the-back pass from Baxter, she initially whiffed on her first shot attempt, but was able to regain control and score her seventh goal of the season.

Bellarmine's best opportunity came in the final thirty seconds when Alicia Hudson sent a free hit roughly halfway up the field where it was corralled by Annie McCarthy as she neared the top of the circle. Mountaineers keeper Claire Grenis, however, stepped out to defend McCarthy, who was unable to get off a shot. With the effort, Grenis finished her second shutout of the year as the Knights were unable to get off a shot.

App State finished with 16 shots, eight on goal, resulting in their two goals. They also held an 8-0 advantage in penalty corners.

Workman finished the day with five saves as the Knights held the Mountaineers to just seven shots, the second-lowest total by one of their opponents this season.

Next up, Bellarmine heads to Farmville, Va., to face Longwood Sunday afternoon at noon ET.
