Sprint football falls to Calumet Saturday night at Holy Cross

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Bellarmine sprint football Knights fell in a home contest to Calumet College of St. Joseph Saturday night at Holy Cross High School 48-0.

Bellarmine (1-2) dropped their fourth straight to Calumet (3-0) and has now lost five out of six overall to the Crimson Wave since the inception of the Midwest Sprint Football League in 2022.

The loss was also the second straight shutout defeat for the Knights after not previously being shut out in their three-plus-year history.

Things started well enough for the Knights at Riley McGrath picked off a Destry Peoples deep ball on the first play of the game at the Bellarmine 16-yard line. The Knights, though, would punt on the ensuing possession. The Crimson Wave offense responded by driving 55 yards for the game's first score, capped by a 10-yard swing pass to the right side from Peoples to former quarterback Nino Barbosa for the touchdown.

Zaire Davis added to the lead with 2:04 left in the first 59-yard run and then Jamall Warnell added a one-yard score to put the Crimson Wave up 21-0 after one.

The Crimson wave did not let up in the second quarter, adding a Nathanial Hoskins touchdown on a 67-yard bomb from Peoples and an eight-yard rush by Warnell for his second score of the night to go up 35-0 at the break.

The Knights accumulated 81 yards through the air in the first half, but netted zero yards on 16 rushing attempts and turned the ball over four times. Peoples threw for 116 yards and two touchdowns in one half of work as the Crimson Wave rushed for 153 as a team in the first half.

With backup quarterback Zayne Guthrie operating the offense in the third quarter, the Crimson Wave looked content to run the ball and make short passes to drain the clock. That was, until Guthrie went over the top and found Tre Simmons for a 35-yard touchdown to put Calumet up 42-0 with nearly 10 minutes gone by in the quarter.

One bright spot for the Knights came early in the fourth when senior Roy Shrout broke through the line and blocked a Calumet field goal attempt. The Knights however, would go three-and-out on the ensuing possession before their punt was blocked and downed at their own 7-yard line. Two plays later, Tristan Villareal raced in for a 10-yard score with 9:49 remaining to put Calumet ahead 48-0 to finish the game's scoring.

Receiver Morgan Capps was the top offensive performer for the Knights, making six grabs for 134 yards. Quarterback Dylan Morris finished with 158 yards on 14-of-31 passing. As a team, the Knights finished with -9 yards rushing.

Warnell led the Calumet offense with 70 yards on the ground and a pair of scores. Davis finished with 54 yards on the ground.

Up next, Bellarmine heads to western Illinois to face Quincy on Sunday, October 5 at 1 p.m. ET (12 p.m. CT).
