JACKSONVILLE, Fla. –
Kenyon Goodin dropped in 6 of 8 three-point attempts and finished with 24 points Thursday night to help Bellarmine to a 77-70 win over host Jacksonville.
The 24 points matched a season high for Goodin, who went 7 for 10 overall inside Swisher Gymnasium. It was the Knights' 17th 20-point individual performance this season after having 12 all of last year. Goodin also scored 24 on November 25 in a win at The Citadel.
Bellarmine (7-12, 2-5 ASUN) ended their three-game skid with a strong shooting performance, sinking 28 of 52 shots (53.8 percent), their best mark in ASUN play since the conference opener at West Georgia on New Year's Day. They earned their second conference win, something that did not happen until February 20 last season.
Jack Karasinski, following a season-low six points at Eastern Kentucky on Saturday, added 14 points and hit half of his 10 shots. Karasinski also affected the game in other ways, contributing five rebounds and matching his career high with four assists.
With the loss, Jacksonville (7-13, 2-5 ASUN) now finds themselves in a four-way tie with Bellarmine, FGCU and rival North Florida for eighth in the ASUN.
The hot shooting started early for the Knights. Bellarmine shot 53.8 percent and connected on 5 of 10 three-point attempts in the first half, enough to take a 38-37 halftime lead. Goodin hit his first three three-point attempts and tallied 11 points in the first half while Karasinski reached also double digits with 10.
The outlook continued to be promising for Bellarmine early in the second. A pair of
Brian Waddell slams gave the Knights a 45-39 lead, forcing a JU timeout.
Whatever JU head coach Jordan Mincy told his team during that breather worked, momentarily at least. The Dolphins rattled off a 9-0 run to claim a 48-45 lead. Still, the Knights battled back to tie it again at 50 after a Goodin three and again at 52 after Waddell's third jam of the second half.
That dunk by Waddell would start a 13-4 run for Bellarmine to stake a seven-point lead. After the spurt finished with a Karasinski fadeaway jumper, a pair of Allen Udemadu freebies and a Hayden Wood three would cut the Knights' lead back to two at 63-61 with 4:21 remaining.
Bellarmine responded with a 7-0 run capped by a Karasinski offensive rebound and putback to send the Knights back up nine with 2:26 left.
Sam Donald then earned the Knights' last bucket of the game with just over two minutes to go, putting Bellarmine's lead back to nine at 72-63.
The Dolphins did not waiver, hitting three of their next four attempts as part of a 7-0 run of their own to shrink the Knights' lead to two. A missed free throw on the front end of a one-and-one by Goodin left the door open for the hosts, trailing by four. JU missed a three on the other end, but an offensive rebound and layup by Jason Thirdkill Jr. sliced the lead in half and made it 72-70 in favor of Bellarmine.
Bellarmine, the second-best free throw shooting team in the ASUN, though, hit five of their last six attempts to seal the 77-70 win.
Waddell (13 points) and
Tyler Doyle (10 points) joined Goodin and Karasinski in double digits. Freshman big man
Jacob Wassler did not score, but chipped in five boards, an assist and a block in his 10 minutes.
Though they attempted just 17 threes, their fewest in ASUN play, the Knights hit nine treys to give them a season-best 52.9 percent for the game.
Wood finished with 21 points for the Dolphins, hitting 7 of 11 from the floor, including 5 of 8 from deep. Thirdkill added 17 and Udemadu scored 12. Jacksonville had three players in double digits, though they had no players averaging double digits entering the game. Thirdkill also had a game-high nine rebounds.
Bellarmine stays in Jacksonville to face the Dolphins' rival, North Florida (4-16, 2-5 ASUN), Saturday. Tipoff was moved from the originally scheduled time of 2 p.m. ET to 11 a.m. ET.
