CHARLOTTE, NC — Playing with twice as many January walk-ons as original roster members, the Bellarmine University women's basketball team was defeated 100-48 by Queens on Thursday in Atlantic Sun Conference action at Curry Arena.
Decimated by injuries, Bellarmine (2-20, 0-9 ASUN) competed with only three players from its season-opening roster along with six walk-ons, including four who joined the team this week. The brand new members — freshmen
Clare Slocum,
Maddie Janszen,
Carly Bryant and
Megan Wearsch — all made their respective collegiate debuts.
Slocum, Janszen and Bryant all scored their first collegiate points. Slocum even pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.
Bellarmine was paced by a career-high 18 points from redshirt junior forward
Andrea Chiquemba, who scored in double figures for the third straight game. Sophomore forward
Kayce Hyman added 15 points, her fourth consecutive performance with at least 15 points.
Alyssa Lewis exploded for 33 points off the bench for Queens (8-12, 2-7). All 17 of her field-goal attempts came from beyond the 3-point line, and she hit 10 of them. Six of the triples came in the first half as the Royals took a 58-25 lead into the break.
Bellarmine will play at 2 p.m. (ET) Saturday at West Georgia.
