LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The Bellarmine University field hockey team dropped its Mid-American Conference finale to Ball State by a score of 2-1 in overtime at Trager Stadium Thursday afternoon.
After a scoreless first half, Bellarmine (3-14, 3-6 MAC) broke through first when
Brooke Buchanan took the ball away from a defender in their half of the field and landed it in the goal to go up 1-0 in the third quarter.
Ball State later tied the contest at 1-1 in the 56th minute, a score that held until the end of regulation.
The Knights earned a penalty corner in overtime but were unable to capitalize on it. The Cardinals pushed their momentum down the field to score their golden goal exactly four minutes into the extra period.
Ball State had the advantage in shots (19-11), saves (8-7) and corners (9-3). The loss for the Knights puts them out of contention for the MAC tournament.
