NASHVILLE, Tn. – Bellarmine softball got back in the win column on Saturday, winning the first game of a doubleheader at Lipscomb 4-2 before dropping game two 5-1 to split the day at Draper Diamond.
The Knights (11-32, 4-13) snapped a 12-game losing streak this afternoon, taking down the Bisons 4-2 in the series opener.
Bellarmine opened the day with two runs in the top of the first, taking advantage of a wild pitch before a bases loaded walk to go up 2-0.
In the third, sophomore
Lele Bennett, who was the game on starting pitcher, helped herself with a solo home run, her team leading sixth of the season. Later in the inning, senior
Madison Davis added another run on an RBI single down the right field line to push the lead to 4-0.
Lipscomb (11-33, 4-13) scratched across two runs in the home half of the third thanks to a two RBI double.
Bennett turned in a strong 6.0 inning performance, allowing just the two runs on five hits with four strikeouts and four walks.
Sophomore
Makenzie Cowburn came on to pitch in the seventh and worked around a leadoff single and a pair of walks to shut down the Bisons, collecting two strikeouts in the process, to record her first career save.
In game two, Lipscomb came out swinging, tallying a run on an RBI double in the first.
Bellarmine answered in the third when sophomore
Lauren Guthrie brought home a run with a sacrifice fly to left, tying the game at 1-1.
From there, it was all Lipscomb as the Bisons took the lead in the fifth with an RBI triple before tacking on three insurance runs in the sixth to take game two 5-1.
Guthrie and freshman
Jayla Manning were the lone Knights to record a hit in the second.
Up next, Bellarmine will close out its series with Lipscomb with a rubber match on Sunday, April 19 at 2 pm E.T.
