LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Bellarmine baseball dropped the opening game of its ASUN Conference series at Lipscomb, falling 5-4 on Thursday night at Ken Dugan Field. The series opener was moved up one day due to impending weather forecasted in the Nashville area on Sunday afternoon.
After Lipscomb built an early lead through the opening four innings, the Knights settled in and began chipping away offensively midway through the game. The Bisons plated three runs in the first inning before adding single runs in the third and fourth to move ahead 5-0. Bellarmine answered in the fifth inning as the Knights loaded the bases before Landon Akers lined a two-RBI single to right field. AJ Swader followed right after Akers in the inning with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 5-3.
The Knights continued to battle late into the game. In the eighth inning, Luca Hoerger delivered an RBI single to center field to score Luke Scales and pull Bellarmine within one at 5-4. Hoerger finished the night 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Swader collected three hits and an RBI. Akers also drove in two runs for the Knights.
On the mound, true freshman Raygan New turned in his best outing of the season in relief, tossing 4.2 innings while allowing just two runs and striking out three after entering in the first inning. Aaron Ragat added three scoreless innings out of the bullpen to keep Bellarmine within striking distance down the stretch.
