COLUMBUS, Ohio — Bellarmine field hockey battled from start to finish Sunday afternoon but came up on the wrong side of a 2-0 decision against Ohio State at Buckeye Varsity Field.
The Buckeyes (1-1) struck first at the 10:01 mark of the opening quarter when Sienna Golden found the back of the cage to give Ohio State an early 1-0 advantage. Bellarmine (0-2) continued to battle throughout the opening frame, with Anouk Richters and Amber Lacy recording shots.
Ohio State doubled its lead early in the second quarter when Emily Barker scored at the 17:10 mark, with Katie Crump providing the assist. The Buckeyes maintained pressure throughout the period, but Bellarmine goalkeeper Megan Clauser kept the Knights within striking distance with five saves in the quarter.
Bellarmine came out aggressively in the third quarter, generating multiple opportunities in the attacking end. The Knights earned five penalty corners in the period and put seven shots toward the Ohio State cage. Cami Paris and Luna Tuncay each recorded shots on goal, while Amy Stripling added multiple attempts as Bellarmine looked to cut into the deficit.
Clauser continued to keep the Knights in the game, making two more saves in the third quarter. Ohio State also earned a penalty stroke in the period, but the attempt sailed wide, keeping the score at 2-0 heading into the final 15 minutes.
The Knights continued to battle in the fourth quarter, but Ohio State's defense held firm. Bellarmine's defense also came up with a key play late in the contest, as Annie Malloy recorded a defensive save with just over four minutes remaining.
Clauser finished the afternoon with 10 saves for the Knights, while Bellarmine totaled nine shots, including four on goal. Richters and Stripling each recorded three shots, while Tuncay added two. Ohio State finished with 22 shots and seven penalty corners.
Bellarmine returns to action on the west coast against Stanford and UC Davis next Friday and Sunday.
