LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University sprint football team was four seconds away from a dramatic home-opening victory Saturday night.
Instead, the Knights saw Calumet College of St. Joseph rally for a 16-15 victory at Holy Cross High School, as Jeau Vinatieri connected on a 7-yard field goal as time expired.
Bellarmine appeared poised to secure its first win of the season after taking a 15-13 lead with 6:18 remaining. Calumet, however, answered with a 12-play, 49-yard drive that consumed the final 4:08 of the contest. The Crimson Wave moved inside the Bellarmine 10-yard line before Vinatieri's field goal split the uprights on the final play.
The heartbreaking finish overshadowed a defensive performance in which the Knights repeatedly gave themselves opportunities to win.
Bellarmine forced six Calumet turnovers, including four interceptions and two fumble recoveries. The four interceptions matched a program record in a game. Sophomore Zion Strozier accounted for two of the interceptions, while Wy Morris and Joseph Sebastian each added one. Malakai Willis and Da'coldus Fields recovered fumbles for the Knights.
The defense also repeatedly came up with stops in critical moments. Bellarmine forced Calumet into a turnover on downs in the second quarter before Wy Morris intercepted DJ Bowles at the Bellarmine 35-yard line. Later in the quarter, the Knights held Calumet without points after the Crimson Wave reached the Bellarmine 20.
Bellarmine struck first on its opening possession, marching 76 yards on 11 plays. Quarterback Kyle Horvath capped the drive by connecting with Aiden Bratcher for a 30-yard touchdown with 9:24 remaining in the first quarter. The extra point was unsuccessful, leaving the Knights with a 6-0 advantage.
Calumet answered with a 99-yard, 16-play drive in the second quarter, with Zaire Davis punching in a 1-yard touchdown to even the score at 6-6.
The Knights regained the lead before halftime when Ryan Bowen drilled a 26-yard field goal with 40 seconds remaining, sending Bellarmine into the break with a 9-7 advantage.
Bellarmine extended its lead early in the third quarter following a 42-yard touchdown strike from Horvath to Cam Nichols. The score came immediately after Da'coldus Fields returned a Calumet punt 36 yards to the Crimson Wave 42-yard line, with Bellarmine retaining possession after Fields fumbled and Cameron Spalding recovered.
The Knights then produced another takeaway moments later when Strozier intercepted Bowles at the Calumet 18-yard line, but Bellarmine was unable to capitalize as Bowen's 22-yard field-goal attempt came up short.
Calumet continued to battle and finally reclaimed the lead midway through the fourth quarter. Davis, who carried 47 times for 240 yards and two touchdowns, scored on a 10-yard run with 6:18 remaining. The Crimson Wave's attempt at a two-point conversion failed, leaving Bellarmine ahead 15-13.
After Bellarmine was forced to punt, Calumet mounted its final drive. Davis and the Crimson Wave ground game moved the ball into Bellarmine territory, eventually reaching the Knights' 7-yard line. After Calumet used its final timeout with four seconds remaining, Vinatieri converted the game-winning field goal.
Horvath completed 9-of-21 passes for 167 yards and two touchdowns, connecting with Bratcher for 59 yards and a touchdown and Nichols for 42 yards and a score. Tyler Smith also hauled in three passes for 59 yards.
Mareese Naves led Bellarmine on the ground with 20 yards on 12 carries.
Defensively, Derek White paced the Knights with 12 tackles, while Gavin Brazzell and Matthew Hopkins each recorded seven. Strozier finished with four tackles to go with his two interceptions, and Da'coldus Fields added three tackles, a fumble recovery and two pass breakups.
Bellarmine finished with 171 yards of total offense, including 167 through the air, while Calumet totaled 349 yards, with 265 coming on the ground.
The Knights return to action Oct. 10 when they host Midway at 1 p.m. at Holy Cross High School.
