Michael Wheatley joined the Bellarmine University sprint football team's staff as the defensive backs and receivers coach prior to the program's inaugural season in 2022.
In the program's inaugural year, Bellarmine to a winning season. The Knights in 2022 went 4-3 overall and 3-2 in the Midwest Sprint Football League, good for third place in the conference. In the first game in program history, Bellarmine captured a 17-15 road victory at Midway on a game-winning 33-yard field goal with 44 seconds left. The Knights earned 12 MSFL All-Conference laurels, with Wheatley's position groups accounting for three (two DBs, one WR) awards.
Wheatley is a 2016 graduate of DeSales High School in Louisville, where he was a member of the 2013 and 2014 Class 2A state football champions. He previously coached five seasons as a secondary and wide receiver coach. Wheatley is a graduate of Bellarmine University with a degree in sports administration and a mathematics minor.
