LOUISVILLE, Ky.--The Bellarmine University women's basketball team cruised past St. Joseph College 93-74 this afternoon in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game in Knights Hall.
Bellarmine's Brittany Edelen led four Knights in double figures with 24 as the home team shot 66 percent from the field in posting the 19-point victory. The Pumas were led by Tatiana Ortiz, who came off the bench to score 20 for the visitors.
Bellarmine (11-6, 4-4 GLVC) scored the game's first point and never trailed as the Pumas relied heavily on the three point shot in the early going and didn't score a basket inside the arc until the 10:37 mark of the first half. The Knights slowly extended their lead and held a 48-32 lead at the half.
In the second period, the Knights kept building their lead and held a 27-point advantage at 83-66 with 6:16 remaining. Bellarmine coasted the rest of the way to settle for a final victory margin of 19.
Bellarmine outperformed St. Joseph's (3-13, 1-6 GLVC) in nearly every phase of the game. The home team outrebounded their guests 46-27, outshot the Pumas 66 percent to 38.6 percent, and dished out 13 more assists. St. Joseph's did force the Knights into 25 turnovers while collecting 15 steals.
Two Knights registered double doubles with Edelen grabbing 10 rebounds to go with her 24 points and Jalissa Chatlos had 13 points and 13 rebounds for the game. Senior Destiny Mattingly hit all seven of her field attempts and all three of her free throw attempts in totaling 17 points on the day. Sophomore Allison Matheis also had a strong game, hitting four of five three pointers on her way to scoring 15.
Bellarmine travels to St. Louis on Monday to face GLVC foe Missouri-St. Louis. Tip is set for 6 p.m. (EST).
