Knights go wire to wire in posting 71-48 win over Tritons

1/18/2010 11:05:29 PM

ST. LOUIS—The Bellarmine University men's basketball team recorded its first road win of the season by blowing past the University of Missouri-St. Louis Triton 71-48 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference contest held at the Mark Twain Center.

The Knights (12-6, 5-4 GLVC) led wire to wire as reigning GLVC Player of the Week Jeremy Kendle had another big game for Bellarmine. The Jeffersonville junior scored 24 while hauling in eight rebounds and dishing out five assists.

“I'm so proud of these guys,” said Bellarmine Coach Scott Davenport. “This was their third game in five days, and to come here on the road and get this win is great. The key was the ability to transfer what we learned in one day of practice and apply that in competition.”

The Knights combined a solid offensive performance with strong defense. Bellarmine shot 56.6 percent from the field while limiting the Tritons (10-4, 4-4 GLVC) to just 34 percent.

Davenport said the offensive play was due to excellent ball reversal and great passing. “It's the extra pass,” he said. It's not the guy getting the assist, it's the guy who's getting him the ball.” For the game, the Knights totaled 24 assists on 30 made baskets.

Defensively, Davenport credited his team's movement. “Our rotations tonight were excellent,” he said.

“Everybody contributed to tonight's win.” Davenport said. He pointed out that everyone coming in at the “4” or “5” spot gave the team positive minutes.

Sophomores Braydon Hobbs and Luke Sprague continued to post solid numbers. Hobbs tallied 10 points and five assists, and Sprague chipped in 13 points and pulled in six rebounds.

Bellarmine now gets a brief rest before traveling to Highland Heights, Ky., to take on the Northern Kentucky Norse at 2 p.m. on Satuday, Jan. 23. The game is to be aired on CBS College Sports.
