ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The Bellarmine University women's basketball team fell behind early and lost to the University of Missouri-St. Louis 75-53 tonight in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game at Chuck Smith Court.
The Knights, playing their third game in five days, ran into a well-rested Triton squad, and the home team blistered the nets for 56.7 percent shooting in the first half to run out to a 45-21 halftime lead.
Bellarmine (11-7, 4-5 GLVC) suffered from both poor shooting and foul trouble to fall into the large deficit. The Knights starting backcourt was a combined one of 11 from the field in the first half, and leading scorer Brittany Edelen was limited to just seven minutes of playing time in the opening period due to foul trouble.
In the second half, the Tritons cooled to just 37 percent shooting, but the Knights' shooting woes continued and were unable to cut into the sizable UMSL lead.
Bellarmine sophomore Allison Matheis finally started to find the range late in the second period and finished with a game high 20 points. Freshman Adrienne Sahm—injured for the first half of the season—saw her most action to date and established a career high with 11.
Missouri-St. Louis (7-10, 3-5 GLVC) was paced by Kristi White and KeAmber Vaughn, who both tallied 16 points for the night.
Bellarmine's next game is Saturday, when they travel to Highland Heights, Ky., to face the Norse of Northern Kentucky. Tip is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.
