KANSAS CITY, Mo.--Rockhurst University's Aaron Morrissey completed an old-fashiioned 3-point play with just 2.7 seconds remaining in the game as the host Hawks snatched a 70-68 victory over the Bellarmine University Knights in a Great Lakes Valley Conference basketball game.
Bellarmine's
Chris Dowe had given the Knights a 1-point lead with 1:29 remaining on his only 3-pointer of the game. Neither team could convert on ensuing possessions before Morrissey finally broke the scoring with his late game heroics.
Rockhurst was led by reigning GLVC Player of the Year Aaron Hill who posted 41 points on the evening as he hit nine of 15 three pointers for the game.
"Give them credit," said Bellarmine Coach
Scott Davenport. "They (Rockhurst) played great in the second half and hit some big shots."
Davenport also praised the effort of his team. "These kids played their hearts out," he said. "We had mechanical problems on the bus, and we didn't get to the hotel until 3:30 in the morning. We played as hard as we could play."
Jeremy Kendle led the Knights with 20 points, and
Oladapo Fagbenle had a big night, tying a career high with 14 points and hauling in 10 rebounds.
Bellarmine falls to 9-5, 2-3, and Rockhurst improves to 9-5, 4-1.
The Knights now must travel to Drury University to face the 18th-ranked Panthers on Saturday afternoon. Tip is scheduled for 2 p.m. (EST).
