KANSAS CITY, Mo.--The Bellarmine University women's basketball team lost on the road tonight, dropping a 55-48 decision to Great Lakes Valley Conference foe Rockhurst University.
The Knights (10-4, 3-2 GLVC) played without the services of starting point guard
Kylie Brady, who is nursing an injured knee. In her place,
Destiny Mattingly stepped into the starting lineup and led Bellarmine in scoring with 14 points.
The game was close throughout, and the Knights found themselves with a slim one-point lead with less than five minutes remaining. After finally gaining the lead, however, Bellarmine's starting frontcourt of
Jalissa Chatlos and
Brittany Edelen both had to exit the game with five fouls.
The host Hawks had no trouble erasing the 1-point deficit, then preserved the victory by knocking down five of eight free throws in the final minute and a half as the Knights misfired on four 3-point attempts over that span.
Rockhurst (5-7, 1-4 GLVC) only managed 30.58 percent shooting on the night, but Bellarmine committed seven more turnovers than the Hawks (17-10) and allowed 17 offensive rebounds to their opponents.
Meghan Hurley came off the Rockhurst bench to tally 16 points for game high honors. For Bellarmine, only Mattingly and Edelen (10 points, nine rebounds) scored in double figures.
Bellarmine returns to action on Saturday, as the Knights continue their road trip with a visit to Drury University. Tip is scheduled for 4:15 p.m (EST).
