CINCINNATI--The Bellarmine University men's basketball team got two free throws from senior
Jeremy Kendle with 1.3 seconds remaining in the game to pull off a 63-61 upset over Division I Xavier University tonight in an exhibition game at the Cintas Center.
The Knights, ranked No. 4 in the NABC preseason poll, were a perfect 16 of 16 from the line as they erased a 10-point halftime deficit to get the victory over the Musketeers--one of only two teams in the nation to have made the Sweet 16 the past three years.
"We didn't play very well in the first half," said Bellarmine Coach
Scott Davenport. "I was disappointed because of the their lack of poise, but we addressed that halftime, and came out and did a much better job in the second half."
Coach Davenport added that perhaps the best take-away from the game was his team's lack of satisfaction from the win. "They were happy, but I know my team and they were in no way, shape or form satisfied (with their play)."
Bellarmine was led by junior
Luke Sprague who collected 16 points aided by a four of five night from 3-point range. The Newburgh, Indiana native also led the Knights with six rebounds. Tu Holloway of Xavier led all scorers with 22 points.
The Musketeers outshot Bellarmine 42 percent to 37 percent, but the Knights won the battle of the boards 35-31.
Bellarmine opens regular season play on Sunday, Nov. 21 with a 2 p.m. home contest against Wayne State University.
