EVANSVILLE, Ind.--The No. 2 Bellarmine University men's basketball team fought back from an early first half deficit to defeat the No. 22 Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles 69-60 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game at the Physical Activities Center.
The win, coupled with the Knights' victory over Kentucky Wesleyan on Thursday night, completes the first road sweep of the two GLVC powerhouses since January of 1980.
Bellarmine was led by
Braydon Hobbs, who scored a season high 22 points while raking in six rebounds and dishing off four assists. The New Albany junior also added three steals to his nights' work.
"Watching (Southern Indiana) on film, they were the most impressive close-out team I've seen," said Bellarmine Coach
Scott Davenport. "They're tough to play against." Davenport added that Bellarmine "did a good job of erasing our mistakes. Our defense in the second half, I thought, was outstanding."
The Screaming Eagles surged out to an eight point bulge over the game's first 11 minutes. Thanks largely to Hobbs' 14 first half points, however, Bellarmine battled back to take a 4-point halftime lead.
In the second half, the Knights never surrendered the lead, but the tenacious Southern Indiana defense helped keep the score close. Bellarmine's largest lead came at the end of the game after
Nick Holmes hit a pair of free throws to give the Knights their final 9-point victory margin.
Bellarmine finished the game shooting 49.1 percent from the floor despite making just five of 21 three point attempts. The Screaming Eagles were held to just 40.4 percent shooting after Bellarmine tightened up defensively in the second half.
Hobbs was joined in double figures by
Jeremy Kendle, who also hauled in seven rebounds to lead the Knights. Southern Indiana's C.J. Trotter tallied 19 points to lead the Screaming Eagles.
The Knights move to 5-0, 2-0 GLVC, while Southern Indiana suffers its first defeat of the year to fall to 5-1, 1-1.
Bellarmine returns to action on Friday, Dec. 10 as they host the Fern Valley Hotel Classic. Game one will feature Indiana University Southeast taking on the Screaming Eagles at 5:30 p.m., followed by Bellarmine squaring off against West Virginia State for the second time this year.
