SOMERS, Wisc.--The No. 4 Bellarmine University Knights blew open a tight game and ran past the Wisconsin-Parkside Rangers 82-54 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game tonight at DeSimone Gymnasium.
The Rangers hit six of 15 3-pointers to keep the game close during the first half and went into the locker room trailing just 38-30. However, the Knights roared past the home team in the second half by scorching the nets with 64.3 percent shooting while limiting UWP to just 24.1 percent. Bellarmine also dominated the glass and claimed a 41-22 rebounding advantage on the night.
Five Bellarmine players hit double figures, led by
Luke Sprague with 20 and
Braydon Hobbs with 18. Senior
Nick Holmes was just a rebound shy of a double-double with 10 points and nine boards.
"Extraordinary players make the players around them better," Bellarmine Coach
Scott Davenport said, "and the stat sheet will never do justice to what
Nick Holmes did tonight. He played phenomenal basketball."
Davenport added, "We did what we set out to do," alluding to achievement of many of the team's goals for the game.
With the win, Bellarmine improves to 11-1 overall and 4-0 in the GLVC--all four wins coming on the road. "To be 4-0 on the road in this league against the great competition we faced is just incredible," Davenport said. "I can remember when we wanted to have a parade when we just won a road game in the GLVC."
The Rangers, who just two nights ago took No. 8 Kentucky Wesleyan to overtime, fell to 4-7 (1-3 GLVC).
The Knights are back in action on Thursday, as they host Drury in 8 p.m. contest.
