SPRINGFIELD, Mo. ---Behind two goals from freshman
Abby Janszen, the No. 22 Bellarmine University women's soccer team picked up a road victory at Drury University on Sunday afternoon, beating the Panthers 3-1.
The win, combined with a loss by Quincy University to the University of Indianapolis, moves Bellarmine(7-0-1, 6-0 GLVC) into sole possession of first place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference standings.
Janszen took a pass from
Adrianna Long and fired from 20 yards out to beat Drury keeper Jenna Jones. Her second goal on the game came just ten minutes later as she beat Jones and the Panther defense for the unassisted goal.
This marks the second game in a row that Janszen has netted a pair of goal as she scored twice in the Knight's 5-0 victory over Missouri S&T on Friday night.
In the 48th minute, senior
Alex Kowalski tallied her fifth goal on the season, scoring from 15 yards out at the top of the box. Kowalski and Janszen now share the team lead in goals scored with five.
The only blemish on the Knights' game came in the 65th minute with a defensive miscommunication that resulted in an own goal. Bellarmine goalkeeper
Amy Kunowski (7-0-1) picked up the win, making five saves on the day.
Bellarmine's stingy defense came up huge again, only allowing Panther forward Nicole Williams, the GLVC's leading scorer, two shots on the day.
Next up for Bellarmine is a home match against Lewis University on Friday, Sept. 30, start time is set for 3:55 PM.
