FINDLAY, Ohio—The Bellarmine University women's soccer team notched its first regular season win by knocking off the Findlay Oilers 3-2 on the road this afternoon.
The Knights (1-0-1) jumped out to 3-0 lead and held off a late comeback bid by the home team.
“I'm pleased,” said Bellarmine Coach Jonathan Velotta. “I thought we played our best attacking game of the year. Before the game we talked about trying to really stay committed inside the 18, and I thought we did a good job of that.”
Allyson Palmer opened the game's scoring in the 39th minute when she took a pass from
Adrianna Long and shot over Findlay goalie Alicia Tutino into the top right corner of the goal.
The Knights took the 1-0 lead into halftime, but opened up 3-0 lead less than midway through the second period on goals by
Christina Kapsalis and
Abby Janszen. The Oilers (0-2) came back with goals in the 76th minute and 84th minute to close the game's scoring.
“It was little disappointing giving up those goals at the end, but overall we played well defensively,” Velotta said. “Both (Findlay) goals came off corners, so we need to work on that this week. But, to go on the road and get a tie and win to open the season is pretty good. I'll take that," he added.
The Knights open their home schedule on Friday afternoon with a GLVC contest against the University of Southern Indiana. Game time is 3:55 p.m.
