ROLLA, Mo. --- The Bellarmine University women's basketball team wrapped up a two game roadtrip on Saturday afternoon by dropping a 74-62 decision at No. 24 Missouri S&T in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.
Even though sophomore
Therese Montano returned to the lineup, the Knights could not overcome a 23-59 (.390) shooting effort on the day to fall to 6-8 on the year and 0-6 in conference. Meanwhile, the Miners stay ahead of the pack in the GLVC West, improving their record to 11-3 and 6-1 in the GLVC.
Missouri S&T used a balanced scoring attack that saw eight different players score in the first half to take a 34-23 lead into the break and never looked backed. Bellarmine did manage to stay within striking distance thanks to their rebounding effort, getting five first half boards from
Kelsey Lamb and four from
Morgan Clemons.
In the second half, S&T built their lead to as many as 22 points before Bellarmine closed on a 13-6 run over the final 5:30 to fall 74-62. The Miners registered assists on 17 of their 25 field goals and also received 30 points off their bench to the Knights' 11.
Senior
Allison Matheis led all scorers and tied her career-high with 22 points including shooting 4-6 from beyond the arc as Montano chipped in 19 for Bellarmine. Karli Sample stuffed the stat sheet for the Miners, going for 13 points, nine rebounds, three steals, and three blocks. Despite Sample's effort on the boards, the Knights won the rebounding battle 35-33, thanks to a team effort where nine players pulled down at least two rebounds apiece.
The Knights have a quick turnaround for their next game as they host instate rival Northern Kentucky University on Monday night at 5:45 p.m. in Knights Hall.
