Knights falter late to Norse, lose 72-65

LOUISVILLE, Ky. --- The Bellarmine University women's basketball team fell victim to a late run by the Northern Kentucky Norse, losing 72-65 in front of a crowd of 1,050 in Knights Hall.

The loss is Bellarmine's sixth in a row and moves the Knights to 6-9 on the season and 0-7 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, meanwhile the NKU improves to 13-2 and 6-1 in the GLVC.

Out of the gate, Bellarmine took thefight to NKU racing out to a 17-12 lead with just 9:00 minutes remaining in the half. The Knights' ball movement was crisp, getting seven assists on 11 made field goals in the opening period.

Defensively, the home standing Knights held the Norse to just 29.2%, including 0-6 from behind the arc in the first half while building a nine point halftime lead, 28-19.

The offensive executing continued in the second half as Bellarmine built their largest lead at 41-31 when Darion Hutchinson converted an old-fashion three pointer with 13:55 left. From there, Northern Kentucky would go on a 17-5 run over the next five minutes to take a lead they would never give up.

Late in the game, the Norse made plays when it counted and eventually pulled out 72-65 victory, the 800th in the program's history. The game could mark the final between the two teams in Knights Hall as NKU is scheduled to make the move to Div.-I next season and join the Atlantic Sun Conference.

Kylie Brady led Bellarmine in scoring, going for 18 points on 6-11 shooting as Hutchinson had 16 points and six boards. Ellen Holton led three NKU players in double figures with a game high 21 points, as Casse Mogan had 17 and Tiara Hopper chipped in 10 points.

The Knights are back in action on Thursday night when they host Lewis University for a conference bout starting at 5:45 p.m.
