LOUISVILLE, Ky. --- Behind a balanced scoring effort, the Bellarmine University women's basketball team held on to take down the Lewis University Flyers 80-74 in Knights Hall on Thursday night in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.
The win snaps a six game losing skid for Bellarmine, (7-9, 1-7 GLVC) while Lewis (4-12, 2-6 GLVC) drops their ninth game in their last ten outings.
Kylie Brady's game-high 20 points led five Knights in double figures to overcome a 42-35 rebounding average by Lewis, including 14 offensive board by the Flyers.
Jumping on the Lewis early, Bellarmine raced out to a 13-3 lead at the first media timeout. The early onslaught did not stop after the timeout, as the Knights led by as many as 19 in the first half after a three pointer by
Darion Hutchinson at the 9:42 mark.
Lewis would not go quietly though, firing back with a 26-11 run over the final nine minutes of the half to close within four points at the break. Bellarmine shot well from the field, going 14-34 (.412) in the opening half, while also picking up three steals and four blocks.
The second half was tightly contested throughout with the lead switching hands several time. Lewis went ahead 62-61 on a layup by Jess Reinhart with 4:59 reaming. It would be the visitors' final lead of the game as the Knights would tighten up on defense, holding on for the 80-74 victory.
Along with Brady, sophomore
Therese Montano had 16 points while
Allison Matheis chipped in 13 of her own. Hutchinson nearly missed a double-double by getting 12 points and pulling down nine boards, while
Betsy Goodin had 13 points off the bench, including 11 in the second half.
Alexus Grayer had 18 points off the Flyer bench as she led four players in double figures. The Bellarmine defense forced Lewis into 19 turnovers on the night, leading to 23 points for the Knights.
Bellarmine now awaits a matchup with No. 21 Wisconsin-Parkside on Saturday afternoon, as the Rangers come into Knights Hall for a 1:00 p.m. matchup.
