Box Score LOUISVILLE, Ky. ---The Bellarmine University women's basketball team ended 2012 with a bang on Monday afternoon, posting an impressive 91-65 victory over the University of Alabama-Huntsville in the finale of the 2012 MetroMedical Solutions New Year's Classic in Knights Hall.
“I'm glad to see us come back after a big win yesterday and play as well as we did,” said
Chancellor Dugan. “Both of these wins were against physical opponents, and we are going to see that every time out once we get into the conference.”
The victory propels Bellarmine to a 10-1 record heading into Great Lakes Valley Conference play, which starts on Thursday night with a home game against Quincy University. Alabama-Huntsville, who was ranked No. 21 in the NABC preseason poll, falls to 5-7 after dropping both games in the classic.
The Knights were hitting on all cylinders from the tip-off. After UAH scored the game's opening basket, Bellarmine charged past the Chargers with a 17-0 run in the first 6:30. The comfortable 15-point margin helped weather a small comeback by UAH, but the Chargers got no closer than eight as Bellarmine kept their foot on the gas and went into halftime with a 41-29 lead after shooting 62.3% from the field on 14-22 shots.
The second half saw more of the same as Bellarmine continued to extend their lead, building it to as many as 28 late on a pair of free throws by
Betsy Goodin. Eleven players saw action with nine finding the scoring column for the Knights.
Bellarmine never cooled off, finishing the game on 29-48 (60.4%), the highest since the team shot 64.4% against Central State on Dec. 15, 2010. “We moved the ball well and took good shots,” said Dugan, adding in that they scored 91 points and still had 19 turnovers.
For the 10th time this season the Knights won the battle of the boards, outrebounding the Chargers 39-28 with
Darion Hutchinson pulling down eight to lead the team.
Guard
Kylie Brady was named MVP of the classic after registering 10 points on Monday. That pushes the senior from Elizabethtown, Ky. over the 1,000 point plateau, the 25th member of the club. Goodin also earned All-Classic honor after registering a game-high 22 points, one shy of her career high.
Dugan praised Brady for the accomplishment and the leadership she brings to the team. “Joining the 1,000 point club is a tremendous achievement and lends itself to the effort not only of Kylie, but of the entire team.”
