ROMEOVILLE, Ill. --- Not able to complete their second comeback victory of the season, the Bellarmine University women's basketball team dropped an 88-84 contest to the Lewis University Flyers on Saturday afternoon in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.

Down by as many as 20 in the second half, Bellarmine (10-11, 4-9 GLVC) drops their second consecutive game, while Lewis (5-16, 3-10 GLVC) wins their first game since Jan. 14.

The Knights jumped on Lewis early, starting the game on an 11-2 run that included a pair of threes by senior Allison Matheis. After settling down though, the Flyers would counter with an 8-4 run of their own to pull within three at the 11:26 mark of the first half.

Late in the first half and leading 27-26, Lewis would make another run, this time 15-0, to stretch their lead out to 41-36 with just under two minutes to play. The Knights would hit several baskets down the stretch to cut the lead to 43-33 at the break.

Taking advantage of 11 first half fouls by Bellarmine, Lewis would go a perfect 13-13 from the line.

The host Flyers would stretch their lead out to 20 at the 16:26 mark of the second period on a lay-up by Madeline Kish to put Lewis ahead 59-39. Bellarmine would slowly chip away at the lead, pulling within five, 83-78, with under a minute to play after Betsy Goodin hit a pair of free throws.

But the Knights would not be able to complete the comeback as Rachel Greenwell's three at the buzzer pushed the final score to 88-84.

Goodin led all scorers with a career-high 23 points, including 19 in the second half.  Other Knights to reach double-figures were Therese Montano who poured in 18 points, while Matheis finished with 12 on four made three-pointers. Allison Osen would have an all around game of nine points, eight rebounds, and three steals.

Lewis put six players in double figures behind Sam Rinehart's 16 as the Flyers finished 22-26 (.850) from the charity stripe.

Bellarmine will return to Knights Hall next week for a pair of GLVC games, hosting St. Joseph's College on Thursday night before a Saturday game against the University of Indianapolis.
