ROMEOVILLE, Ill. --- The Bellarmine women's basketball team couldn't hold onto a halftime lead on the road at Lewis University, falling to the Flyers 77-65 on Thursday night in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game.
Thanks in large part to five first half 3-pointers, Bellarmine (17-8, 7-7 GLVC) headed into the break with a 40-30 advantage over host Lewis (17-5, 10-4 GLVC). The Knights hit 17-of-40 (42.5%) shots in the opening half and dominated the glass by pulling down 12 offensive boards. But Bellarmine couldn't convert those extra chances into points, getting just two second chance points in the opening half.
The Knights maintained their lead for the first seven minutes of the second half before the Flyers went on a pair of runs to steal momentum. With Bellarmine leading 50-43 and just over 13-minutes to play, Lewis ran off nine straight points to take their first lead since the early going.
After the Knights regained the lead at 55-54, the Flyers went on a 15-2 spurt to build a 13 point lead. That blitz would doom the Knights as they were never able to get within 11 the rest of the way.
The Flyers pounded the ball inside all game long, scoring 50 of their points in the paint while getting 16 of their remaining 27 points from the charity stripe. Lewis went to the free throw line 22 times, compared to just 6 for Bellarmine.
Betsy Goodin led three players in double-figures with 15 with
Kylie Brady (12) and
Darion Hutchinson (10) also shouldering the scoring output. Forward
Morgan Clemons had another strong performance down low, adding 8 points while pulling down a game-high 10 boards.
Forward Jess Reinhart led all scorers with 22 while Labrenthia Murdock filled the stat sheet with 18 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 steals.
Bellarmine will stay on the road for the rest of the weekend, traveling to Somers, Wisc. on Saturday afternoon to battle the Rangers of Wisconsin-Parkside for a 2:00 matchup.
