Box Score Kenosha, Wis. — The Bellarmine University women's basketball team won their third straight conference game in Kenosha, Wis. on Thursday evening as they escaped from Wisconsin-Parkside, 82-77. Sophomore guard
Sarah Galvin scored a game-high 25 points in the win.
The Knights trailed heading into halftime, but an 18-0 run in the second period vaulted BU into an important conference road win.
"I was pleased with our tenacity and the way we came back in the second half," said head coach
Chancellor Dugan. "I finally got them to buy into playing how they should play and when they play hard, everybody gets to play."
Bellarmine (9-7, 5-3 GLVC) held the lead for much of the first period, but the 14-for-23 (60.9 percent) Rangers shooting in the half and Bellarmine's 15 team fouls allowed Wisconsin-Parkside (6-10, 2-6 GLVC) to crawl back. With 15:10 left in the half, Bellarmine held an 11-4 lead over the home team, but the Knights' lead withered as the half progressed. With 4:47 to play in the period, a pair of Rangers free throws tied the game at 30 apiece. The two teams found themselves tied five more times over the next four minutes as they traded buckets. Parkside didn't miss a field goal in the final three minutes of the half and were able to come away with a 42-41 halftime lead.
The Knights shot 16-for-33 (48.5 percent) in the period and pulled down 19 first-half rebounds including nine offensive boards. Parkside finished the half with 11 rebounds. Bellarmine had 10 assists and seven rebounds in the period, and the Rangers had four assists and seven giveaways.
Bellarmine defensive schemes confused the Parkside attack. The Knights switched to a zone defense in the second period and were able to press effectively as well.
"I thought our press was good and our zone confused them," said Dugan.
Trailing 45-47, Bellarmine shot into an 18-0 run, hitting all six of their shots from the floor and holding Wisconsin-Parkside to 0-for-3 from the field and six turnovers. Bellarmine ended the run with a 63-47 lead with 12:00 to play in the game.
But the game wasn't over, and in a back-and-forth contest, the Rangers fought back. With Bellarmine holding a 73-63 lead, an 8-0 UWP run cut BU's lead to two, 73-71, with 3:11 to play. Wisconsin-Parkside would not get any closer as Bellarmine was 6-for-6 from the free throw line in the final 13 seconds and prevented the Rangers from equalizing the score or taking the lead. The Knights came away with a hard fought 82-77 conference road win.
For the game, Bellarmine was 26-for-54 (48.1 percent) from the field, 3-for-7 (42.9 percent) from the three-point line, and 27-for-36 (75.0 percent) from the free throw stripe, including a 20-for-25 (80 percent) second-half free throw performance. The Knights finished with 30 rebounds, 14 assists, 15 turnovers, and seven steals.
Wisconsin-Parkside shot 28-for-50 (56.0 percent) from the floor, 7-for-18 (38.9 percent) from behind the arc, and 14-for-23 (60.9 percent) from the line. The Rangers pulled in 29 rebounds, had 14 assists, 20 turnovers, and six steals.
Bellarmine has forced at least 20 turnovers in three straight games, and in four of their last five contests. The Knights' scored nearly half their points (40) in the paint and had 17 second chance points on their 12 offensive rebounds.
Galvin's 25 points were the seventh straight game she's put up double-figures, and the third time this season she's finished with 20 or more points.
"I tell you what, that kid just scores," said Dugan. "She works hard to make it look easy and she's always smiling."
Sophomore guard
Mackenzie Martinez had 15 points and two steals, freshman guard had nine points and five rebounds, and senior guard
Therese Montano had 11 points and was 9-for-10 from the free throw line including four free throws down the stretch that sealed the win.
Coming off the bench was freshman guard
Kelsey Adwell who helped spark the Knights in the win over Southern Indiana on Monday and was effective in the press against Parkside tonight as well.
"That's two games in a row that she's really lifted us off the bench," said Dugan.
The Knights will travel to No. 24 Lewis on Saturday for a 2:00 p.m. EST tipoff. Lewis fell to Wisconsin-Parkside on Monday, 50-51.
