1/25/2014 4:45:00 PM

Box Score ROMEOVILLE, Ill. — Despite holding a nine point advantage at halftime, the Bellarmine University women's basketball team fell on the road in a conference matchup with No. 23 Lewis, 90-82. A late second half Flyers run was too much for the Knights. Sophomore forward Sarah Galvin scored 24 to lead the Knights.

"I love the effort that the girls had today," said head coach Chancellor Dugan. "They gave me everything they had."

Both squads jumped into a fast start in Romeoville. Just two minutes into the game, Bellarine trailed 9-2. However, the Knights responded with a 15-6 run and tied the game at 17 apiece on a layup by sophomore forward Sarah Galvin with 14:04 to play in the period.

A layup by Bellarmine junior forward Morgan Clemons with 9:02 to play in the half put the visitors on top, 30-29, and they would hold the lead for the remainder of the half. The teams swapped buckets for several minutes but a 16-7 Bellarmine run to close out the half gave the Knights a nine points lead, 53-44, heading to the locker rooms.

Bellarmine and Lewis spent the first 20 minutes running through a fast-paced contest. The teams were tied five times and exchanged the lead three times. Galvin finished the period with 18 points to lead all scorers and Bellarmine put up their second-highest single-half point total of the season with 53 points.

The Knights forced 13 turnovers and converted them into 15 points in the first half.

A slow second half start by Bellarmine allowed the Flyers to get back into the game. Consequently, Lewis took the lead four minutes into the period, 58-56, on a pair of free throws.

Bellarmine kept it tight the rest of the game and took a one-point lead on three separate occasions over the Flyers during the second half. Each time, Lewis fought back and stole the lead away from Bellarmine.

With the Knights trailing by two points, 78-80, with 1:45 to play, a pair of Lewis layups and free throws stretched the Flyers' lead in the waning minutes. Despite their effort, Bellarmine couldn't capitalize and Lewis' late-game free throws sealed the deal for the Flyers and the Knights fell 82-90.

Galvin scored 24 points for Bellarmine in the losing effort and added three rebounds and a career-high five steals. It was her second straight 20 point performance and her eighth straight double-figure scoring game.

Sophomore guard Mariah Gador added 14 points on 6-for-8 shooting and both sophomore guard Mackenzie Martinez and senior guard Therese Montano scored 12 for the Knights.

Bellarmine finished with 33-for-76 (43.4 percent) shooting from the field, 2-for-12 (16.7 percent) from three-point range, and 14-for-16 (87.5 percent) from the free throw line. Lewis shot 32-for-61 (52.5 percent) from the floor, 0-for-4 from three, and 26-for-33 from the charity stripe.

The Flyers won the rebounding battle 42-35. Bellarmine had 12 assists in the game and 11 turnovers and Lewis had 16 assists and 17 turnovers, 10 of which were Bellarmine steals.

For Lewis, two players, junior forward Jess Reinhart and sophomore forward Mariah Henley recorded double-doubles. Reinhart had 24 points and 10 rebounds and Henley finished with 11 points and 10 boards. Redshirt-sophomore Jamie Johnson led all scorers with 26 points in the game.

After splitting a two-game road trip, Bellarmine will return to Knights Hall on Thursday, Jan. 30 for a 5:45 p.m. game against McKendree.
