Box Score INDIANAPOLIS—The Bellarmine University Knights needed a huge effort on the road tonight against the No. 4 Indianapolis Greyhounds, and that's exactly what they got in picking up a 96-81 victory in the Great Lakes Valley Conference game in Nicoson Hall.
Bellarmine (20-5, 12-5 GLVC) fired on all cylinders from the outset and led almost from start to finish. The Greyhounds (22-3, 14-3 GLVC) took the lead just once in the early proceedings as BU built a double digit lead in the first half and led 45-35 at the break. The Knights scorched the nets all night long, shooting exactly 60 percent from the floor in both halves including nailing 14 of 21 3-pointers.
Bellarmine Coach
Scott Davenport said, "Fourteen out of 21 threes is just an unbelievable number, but they were all off of great passing. Their poise was tremendous," he said of his team. "They didn't turn it over and they hit free throws. It was just great execution."
The ninth year coach also said a large contingent of fans, who made the trek to Nicoson Hall, helped give the team a lift. "I want to thank these Bellarmine people who came up here. The support we had from Louisville tonight was absolutely tremendous."
Bellarmine got solid contributions from just about every player who logged minutes tonight.
George Suggs led the Knights with a career-high 21 points and five rebounds, and
Vance Hall added 17 points and eight assists. Also reaching double figures for the Knights were
Keisten Jones with 16 and
Josh Derksen with 12.
The Knights needed everyone's efforts to help combat UIndy's Tyrae Robinson, who poured in a career high 34 points. The senior guard was seven of 12 from the field, including three of five from long range, but he did most of his damage from the foul line where he was 17 of 19. Bellarmine, as a team, shot 19 free throws.
In the second period, the Greyhounds made a small run at the opening of the half to trim Bellarmine's lead to six at the 15:56 mark, but the Knights soon re-established a double-digit lead and, UIndy got no closer than 11 in the final 10:45 of the game.
Bellarmine's final numbers would be impressive in any college basketball game, but doing it on the road against the No. 4 team in the country makes the statistics even more special. On the night, BU hit 33 of 55 field goals (60%), made 14 of 21 3-pointers (66.7%), canned 16 of 19 free throws (84.2%), dished out 21 assists and turned the ball over just seven times.
"I had a tough time addressing the team after the game without getting emotional," Davenport admitted in his postgame radio interview, "because these guys just opened up their chests and poured their hearts out on the floor tonight."
With the NCAA Regional Rankings omitting the Knights in the first ranking last week, tonight's game was a great opportunity for BU to strenghthen its postseason resume. Since the rankings were released, losses have been suffered by six of the 10 teams ranked in the Midwest Region while Bellarmine has gone 2-0 on the road.
The Knights, who made it six consecutive 20-win seasons with tonight's victory, get another stern test in their final regular season game on Thursday when they visit the No. 20 Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles.
