Box Score 2 LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The Bellarmine softball team made its home spring debut Saturday afternoon at Knights Field, but the visiting Ashland University Eagles swept a doubleheader by the scores of 3-2 and 2-0. The games were scheduled for tomorrow, but were moved up due to weather considerations.
In the opener, Ashland took an early lead as leadoff hitter Cayla Seidler doubled to left and came around to score when the number two batter Taylor Menhart singled up the middle. Bellarmine pitcher
Alicia Miller pitched out of any more harm by striking out two of the next three.
The Knights came back to tie the game in the third when
Ally Foster doubled off the right center field fence and
Erica Knollman followed up with a single down the right field line.
Both teams went hitless in the fourth and fifth innings, but the Eagles broke through for two runs in the top of the sixth, collecting three singles and taking advantage of a Bellarmine error to register two unearned runs and take a 3-1 lead.
The Knights responded in the home half of the sixth as
Olivia Russell,
Melissa Hammer,
Hannah Daunhauer, and
Rachel Fox all singled to score a lone run. Bellarmine missed out on an opportunity for more, however, as Russell was cut down at the plate by the right fielder when she tried to score on Daunhauer's single.
Bellarmine held Ashland scoreless in the top of the seventh but could not muster a rally in the bottom half, and the Eagles hung on for the 3-2 win.
In game two, Ashland took advantage of the only error in the game to plate two unearned runs in the top of the fourth and hung on to win 2-0.
With darkness falling, the Knights mounted a rally in the bottom of the fifth when
Kelsey Hicks hit a one-out double and
Ally Foster was intentionally walked. Hammer's sacrifice bunt got both runners in scoring position, but they were left stranded as Eagle first baseman Jen Moore snared a grounder off of Knollman's bat and stepped on the bag to end the game. The game was called due to darkness after the fifth.
