Box Score EVANSVILLE, Ind. — After a slow start by the Bellarmine University women's basketball team, the Knights fell 58-71 to Southern Indiana in their regular season finale on the road in Evansville, Ind. Sophomore forward
Sarah Galvin led the way with 15 points and three steals in the loss.
"We had a chance but just shot ourselves in the foot," said head coach
Chancellor Dugan. "Our start hurt us and that's on us. We need to make adjustments and come out more focused. We can't be so passive."
With the score tied 6-6 with 17:05 remaining in the first half, Southern Indiana sprinted onto a 17-1 run that gave the Screaming Eagles a 23-7 lead over Bellarmine with 8:53 until the break.
Bellarmine (13-13, 9-9 GLVC) trailed by double-figures the rest of the half and went to the locker room down by 12, 25-37.
The Knights pushed back in the second half and cut the Southern Indiana advantage to within 10 points for the first time since the score was 7-18 with 10:48 left in the first half. Bellarmine sophomore guard
Mackenzie Martinez converted a three-point play and then drained a three-pointer 48 seconds later to make the score 39-46 with 12:40 until the final buzzer.
The Knights cut the deficit to four, 56-60, on a layup by Galvin with 2:30 left in the game but couldn't get any closer in the game's dying minutes, eventually falling 58-71.
Bellarmine failed to score 60 points for the first time since a 52-76 loss at Union University on Dec. 16. The Knights shot 18-for-54 (33.3 percent) from the field, 3-for-12 (25.0 percent) from behind the arc, and 19-for-26 (73.1 percent) from the free-throw line in the game.
Galvin shot 6-for-8 from the floor and added three free-throws for her 16th double-figure scoring game of the season. Her three steals led BU and the sophomore pulled down four rebounds, including three offensive boards.
Martinez scored 13 points and added two blocked shots. Senior guard
Therese Montano had 11 points and added three assists and a pair of rebounds. Junior forward
Morgan Clemons led Bellarmine with five rebounds.
Southern Indiana (18-8, 12-6 GLVC) shot 22-for-51 (43.1 percent) for the game, 3-for-8 (37.5 percent) from three, and 24-for-31 (73.1 percent) from the stripe.
Screaming Eagles junior forward Anna Hackert scored a game-high 22 points on 7-for-16 shooting and 12 rebounds for the double-double. Junior center Mary O'Keefe was the only other player for USI who scored in double-figures with her 15 points. O'Keefe added nine rebounds.
Bellarmine forced 21 turnovers, the highest total the Knights have forced since the same USI squad had 27 giveaways in Bellarmine's win over the Screaming Eagles on Jan. 20. The Knights gave the ball up 15 times.
The Knights had six assists, two blocks, eight steals. Southern Indiana had 13 assists, three blocks, and 12 steals. The Screaming Eagles out-rebounded the Knights 46-30 in the game and had 30 points in the paint to Bellarmine's 20.
Despite the loss, Bellarmine's postseason plans did not change. Because of results around the league, the Knights will travel to Maryville on March 2 to face the Saints who Bellarmine beat 82-81 on Senior Day, Feb. 15 on a three-pointer by freshman guard
Destony Curry with three seconds to play.
"We've got a lot going for us and it's not going to be fun playing Bellarmine," said Dugan.
