ROMEOVILLE, Ill.—The Bellarmine Knights faced another tough test on the road this afternoon as the No. 21 Lewis Flyers kept their perfect Great Lakes Valley Conference record intact with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-20) victory in Neil Carey Arena.
The Flyers improved to 18-1 on the season and ran their 2015 GLVC record to 9-0 with the win. Bellarmine fell to 7-12, 2-7 GLVC.
Even with the straight sets loss, Bellarmine Coach
Jenni Grzebin can take away some positives, as the Knights were competitive in every set. In the final set, Bellarmine faced a seven-point deficit but fought back to tie the game at 17 before the host Flyers closed on an 8-3 run to sew up the victory.
"They're top of the conference," said Grzebin, referring to Lewis, "and we are just five points away. The good news is we can control the five points."
Bellarmine's
Margaret Horihan and
Ashley Jefferson had nine kills apiece to lead the Knights while Lewis's Alexis Davito matched that total to pace the Flyers.
Defensively, Lewis posted seven team blocks while the Knights managed only two. Bellarmine won the digs battle 58-50 as BU libero
Jordyn Kuchenbrod registered a game-high 17.
Bellarmine's next opponent is yet to be determined as their next action will come Friday and Saturday in the Midwest Crossover Tournament in which all the teams will be seeded.
