MUNCIE, Ind.-After playing the Division I Ball State Cardinals close over the first half, the Bellarmine field hockey team saw the host team explode for five second half goals for a 7-1 victory over the Knights today at BSU's Turf Field.
The Knights barely avoided a shutout as
Amanda Jaworski notched her first goal of the season on the game's final play as she re-directed the ball off the sticks of
Lillie Nitzken and
Alex Ginter in a rare double-assisted goal off a penalty corner.
Bellarmine faced a 2-0 deficit at the halftime break, but matched the Cardinals in both shots (five) and shots on goal (four) in the first 35 minutes.
After 10 scoreless minutes to open the second half, the Cardinals suddenly caught fire, erupting for five goals in the next 19 minutes to blow the game open.
For the game, BSU outshot the Knights 18-8 and owned a 12-6 advantage in shots on goal. Both teams recorded five saves on the day.
Merinda Morley scored two of the Cardinals' seven goals to lead Ball State, which improved to 2-12.
The Knights, who are now 7-4 on the season, return to action on Friday with an ECAC road trip to Lindenwood University.
