ST. CHARLES, Mo.—A "mystery" goal derailed a good game by the Bellarmine field hockey team as they dropped a 3-2 decision to Lindenwood on Friday evening at Hunter Stadium in an Eastern College Athletic Conference contest.
The Knights had jumped out to a 2-0 lead over the Lions when an "own goal" got Lindenwood on the scoreboard with just under 14 minutes remaining in the first half.
"I have no explanation for that goal," said Bellarmine Coach
Mark Blankenbaker. "Our girls on the field don't know how that was scored."
The Lions got an equalizer just two minutes later as Greta Banholzer got behind the Bellarmine defense and beat the Bellarmine goalie on a nice play.
Bellarmine kept the pressure on Lindenwood all night, firing 20 shots at the Lion defense, but the hosts were up to the task as goalie Victoria Gil had five second half saves and seven overall. Lindenwood's Maroussia Buysschaert notched the only goal of the second period to lift the Lions to the victory.
"We played well," Blankebaker said. "We outshot them, had more penalty corners and really controlled the pace. They (Lindenwood) got two odd goals, and those are the ones that beat you."
The Knights got goals from
Anna O'Toole and
Kelsey O'Bryan with
Dana Hemingway and
Elle Lichte getting credit for assists.
Bellarmine falls to 7-5 overall with a 1-3 mark in ECAC play while the host Lions (7-6) continue to lead the league with a 4-0 conference record.
The Knights are back in action again tomorrow on Lindenwood's home turf as they take on Dowling in a neutral site game.
