LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The last time the Bellarmine University men's soccer team met Quincy, the Knights suffered a heart-wrenching defeat.
But in the rematch on Friday at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium, the Knights experienced a chest-pounding triumph.
Four different Bellarmine players scored goals as the Knights put away two in each half of a dominant 4-1 victory over the Hawks in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
"The guys came out and played with more purpose tonight," BU Coach
Tim Chastonay said. "They played with great energy and fight against a very good Quincy side."
It was the highest-scoring effort this season for Bellarmine (9-5, 7-4 GLVC), which has won two straight matches. The Knights emphatically avenged a pair of one-goal losses to Quincy (8-4-1, 7-3-1) last season, the latter of which saw the NCAA Final Four-bound Hawks score twice inside the final three minutes in a 2-1 victory in the GLVC Tournament.
There was no suspense on Friday. By the waning minutes, Bellarmine had already built an insurmountable 4-0 lead compliments of goals by sophomore forward
Nathan Jones, sophomore forward
Ryan Fagan, freshman midfielder
Magnus Bertilsson and sophomore forward
Joe Workman.
In the season-best offensive outing, Bellarmine piled up 22 shots, with 12 coming on goal. Perhaps most impressive is that the slew of opportunities were created without injured leading scorer
Beau Laufer.
"It was nice to see four different guys score goals tonight," Chastonay said. "They all stepped up in a big way with Beau being out."
Chastonay had been imploring the Knights to improve their starts in matches, and they obliged as Jones scored in the 24th minute. Bertilsson crossed to him racing down the right side of the box, and Jones buried his shot inside the far post for a 1-0 lead on his first goal of the season.
Not content to sit on a 1-0 advantage, the Knights added a second goal before halftime when sophomore forward
Luke Mocherman headed a pass to Fagan, who rifled a shot from the left side into the net from 15 yards out. It was Fagan's second goal this season and proved to be the game-winner after Quincy's David Geerling scored in the 85th minute.
By that time, Bellarmine had racked up two more goals. After taking a 2-0 lead at the intermission, the Knights continued to aggressively attack in the second half, as Bertilsson made a deft one-touch off a cross from Jones into the left corner of the net for a 3-0 advantage in the 59th minute. It was the first goal of Bertilsson's collegiate career.
Workman's goal was as equally impressive as the previous three. He received a pass from sophomore midfielder
Trevor Thompson and fired a shot from approximately 30 yards out that whistled into the left corner of the net. It came in the 68th minute and marked the second goal of the season for Workman.
Meanwhile, Bellarmine's defense was customarily stout, allowing only three shots in the first half and eight total, with four coming on goal. Freshman goalkeeper
Zach Pogue earned the win and made three saves in nearly 80 shutout minutes of play. The Knights also had a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.
"I felt the back line played well, stayed organized and did a good job of slowing down some of their scoring threats," Chastonay said.
Bellarmine will host Truman State at 2:30 p.m. (ET) Sunday on Senior Day.
"Truman State will be a big test for our guys," Chastonay said. "We need to put this game behind us and move on to them."
