LOUISVILLE, Ky. — On Sunday at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium, the Bellarmine University men's soccer team found the consistency in results that the Knights had been seeking since the start of the month.
Polishing off a superb weekend that also included a convincing victory over Quincy, the Knights got a goal from junior defender
Zach Digan late in the second half of a 1-0 victory over Truman State in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
"It was a hard-fought, physical game today," BU Coach
Tim Chastonay said. "Our guys showed a great amount of physical and mental toughness throughout the match."
The surging Knights (10-5, 8-4 GLVC) won their third straight match and improved to 6-1 at home. They had split their two games over the previous three weekends of play before sweeping the Hawks and Bulldogs (6-9, 5-7).
Bellarmine's offense didn't equal the explosiveness it showed against Quincy in a 4-1 triumph, but the Knights managed to grind out a crucial victory over Truman State by making good on one of their three shots on goal.
It occurred in the 85th minute when sophomore midfielder
Callum Southern curled a deep free kick from near the right sideline roughly 12 yards in front of the goal. Truman State's goalkeeper charged out to attempt to halt the pass but didn't get there in time, as Digan headed the ball into the open net despite a defender right on his hip. It was Digan's first goal of the season and Southern's second assist.
"We struggled all game to find any sort of rhythm, so it was fitting the goal came from a set piece," Chastonay said. "It was a great service from Callum, and Digan worked really hard to get his head on it."
Freshman goalkeeper
Zach Pogue and Bellarmine's defense registered the Knights' seventh shutout. Truman State finished with 11 shots, including four on goal. BU totaled 10 shots. In 15 matches, Bellarmine's defense has yielded more than one goal only twice.
Before the match,
J.D. Hawkins,
Connor Murphy and
Brandon Shuck were honored on Senior Day.
Bellarmine next heads to Missouri-St. Louis on Friday and Maryville on Sunday.
"It was a great weekend for this group, and a nice way to send our seniors out," Chastonay said. "We need a solid week of training to get ready for both UMSL and Maryville."
