LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The
Trevor Thompson-
Beau Laufer combination for the Bellarmine University men's soccer team overwhelmed Saint Joseph's on Friday at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
The Knights' duo set each other up for scores, and freshman midfielder
Christian Lister added the first goal of his collegiate career in a 3-0 romp over the Pumas in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
"After a short week of training this week and several guys injured from last weekend, I was concerned about how we would approach this game," BU Coach
Tim Chastonay said. "The guys came out very prepared and ready for the game."
Freshman midfielder
Keegan Gordon contributed an assist for Bellarmine (7-3, 5-2 GLVC), which won for the fifth time in six matches. Freshman goalkeeper
Zach Pogue delivered his fifth shutout in the victory over the Pumas (4-4, 3-4).
Bellarmine created numerous scoring opportunities, piling up 23 shots with 10 coming on goal. Thompson cashed in on one of those chances in the 17th minute. The sophomore midfielder converted a through ball from Laufer into his second goal of the season.
After recording his third assist of the year, Laufer netted his fourth goal in the 51st minute. The junior midfielder was the recipient of an expert cross from Thompson.
The first goal in Lister's career at Bellarmine came in the 78th minute. He received a cross from Gordon and rifled a shot that deflected off the St. Joe's goalkeeper into the net.
"The second half was some of the best soccer we have played all year," Chastonay said. "The second goal was a tremendous build-up and great service for Beau to finish."
Bellarmine's defense held Saint Joseph's to 11 shots, including four on goal. The Knights have allowed two goals in their last five matches.
Bellarmine will host Indianapolis at 2:30 p.m. (ET) on Sunday. The Greyhounds are the reigning GLVC Tournament champions and the preseason favorite to win the league.
"After another physically demanding game, we now have to refocus and get ourselves prepared for Indianapolis," Chastonay said.
