SPARKILL, N.Y.—The Bellarmine University field hockey team got back on the winning track with a 3-1 road victory today at St. Thomas Aquinas' Spartan Field.
The Knights were led by
Kathryn Schneidtmiller, who recorded both a goal and an assist in today's action.
"We had a good effort today," said Bellarmine Coach
Mark Blankenbaker. "We had more ball movement and controlled the ball in our offensive end. We had a lot of opportunities that we didn't finish in our circle, but this was a good team win. We played with energy today."
The Knights dominated for most of the first half when they outshot the host Spartans 8-1.
Alexis Van Wallaghen got the Knights on the board first with her fourth goal of season 10:54 into the contest. Schneidtmiller scored the Knights' second goal--the eventual game winner--21:37 into the game as Bellarmine took a 2-0 lead into halftime.
In the second period, the Spartans took advantage of a penalty corner to slice the Bellarmine lead in half with 15:10 remaining in the game. Bellarmine answered, however, with a
Kelsey O'Bryan goal to re-establish the two-goal margin.
Bellarmine's
Sara Nicolas worked all 70 minutes in the cage to pick up her first career victory at Bellarmine.
The Knights improve to 3-2 on the season while St. Thomas Aquinas slips to 1-6.
