Knights blitz Cardinals for 3 goals in final 15 minutes in shutout

LIBERTY, Mo. — A match that suggested overtime was on the horizon instead turned into a romp for the Bellarmine University men's soccer team.

On Friday at William Jewell, the Knights erupted for three goals inside the final 15 minutes as they surged to a 3-0 victory over the Cardinals in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

"It was big to get a win on the road tonight," BU Coach Tim Chastonay said.

Senior defender Brandon Shuck, sophomore defender Mike Albes and sophomore midfielder Ryan Fagan each scored one goal for Bellarmine (6-2, 4-1 GLVC), which won its fourth consecutive match. Shuck also tallied an assist, as did junior midfielder Beau Laufer and sophomore forward Luke Mocherman.

Bellarmine attacked at will. The Knights piled up 21 shots against William Jewell (2-5-1, 1-4), but none found the net before the 75-minute mark.

They sure did after that, though.

Bellarmine struck twice off set pieces. On the team's first goal, Laufer curled a corner kick to Shuck, who met the ball as he was charging forward and hammered it with his head into the net for a 1-0 lead in the 76th minute.

Roughly four minutes later, Shuck spotted Albes on the right side off another set piece. The reigning GLVC Defensive Player of the Week, who had collected assists on game-winning goals in three straight matches, bent a shot inside the far post for a 2-0 lead.

The Knights weren't finished yet. Fagan received a pass from Mocherman and laced a shot into the net to cap the outburst.

"We struggled at times to get into a rhythm, and I thought William Jewell caused us some real problems with how they defended," Chastonay said. "Our patience was rewarded with three very nice goals. It was nice to see Brandon Shuck get on the end of a corner to get the game-winner."

Bellarmine held a 21-8 superiority in shots, including 10-2 on frame. The Knights posted their fourth shutout as freshman goalkeeper Zach Pogue had two saves and moved to 6-1.
