AURORA, Ill.—The Bellarmine University volleyball team pulled out a courageous five-set victory over Ohio Dominican today on the final day of the Mizuno Midwest Region Crossover Tournament at the Great Lakes Center.
After falling behind two sets to one, the Knights dug deep to pull out a 27-25 fourth set victory and force a deciding fifth set. In the final frame, the Knights and Panthers fought to an 11-11 tie before Bellarmine closed out the match by scoring the final four points.
Junior
Margaret Horihan turned in another solid performance blasting 22 kills while committing just four attack errors to hit .367 for the match.
Other top performers for the Knights were
Hayden Dailey, who matched Horihan's 22 kills, while setter
Allie Muha amassed 55 assists and libero
Jordyn Kuchenbrod came up with 27 digs.
Ashley Jefferson and
Bridget Guinane also reached double digit kills with 11 apiece.
For the tournament, the Knights went 2-1 with victories over Ohio Dominican and Lake Superior State and a five-set loss to Ashland . The Crossover features 16 Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) volleyball teams competing against 15 institutions representing the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) and five programs from the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC).
This year, the GLIAC went 30-15 overall while the GLVC was 23-25 and the G-MAC went just 1-14.
The Knights were well-represented on the Crossover All Tournament Team with Kuchenbrod and Muha claiming two of the GLVC's six allotted spots. Kuchenbrod led the entire tournament in digs per set averaging 6.85, which included a career-best 40 in BU's match against Ashland. Muha, meanwhile, tallied a remarkable 139 assists in Bellarmine's three Crossover matches.
