Knights toppled by Greyhounds in four sets

INDIANAPOLIS—After the host Indianapolis Greyhounds took a decisive first set victory, the Bellarmine Knights rebounded and put up a tough battle before UIndy prevailed in four sets (25-16, 22-25, 25-23, 31-29) in a Great Lakes Valley Conference match at the Ruth Lilly Center.

The match was highlighted by an epic battle in the fourth set that featured five match points for the Greyhounds and two set points for the Knights.

Bellarmine led 24-23, but UIndy rallied with two straight points to reach their first match point at 25-24. The Knights knotted the score on a kill by Margaret Horihan, but the Hounds answered to reach another match point at 26-25.

Bellarmine responded with a two point rally—both on Horihan kills—to post another set point.  The Greyhounds rebounded, however, and posted two more match points before they finally closed out the match by recording their 14 team block of the night and win the final set 31-29.

Bellarmine's Margaret Horihan and UIndy's Becca Lira tied for game-high kills with 22.  Shelby Ruffner, the Greyhound middle blocker, had a strong night on both sides of the net, recording 17 kills and a .429 attack percentage on offense and coming up with a solo block and five assisted blocks on defense.

The Knights got another outstanding performance from libero Jordyn Kuchenbrod.  The sophomore from Louisville came into the weekend leading the nation in total digs and did her best to hang onto the lead by chalking up 39 on the night, falling just one short of her career high.

Horihan also helped out on the defensive end and tallied her 11th double-double of the year by recording 13 digs to go along with her 22 kills.

Junior setter Allie Muha became just the fifth Bellarmine player to record more than 2700 assists in a career.  She now has 2,740 after recording 41 in tonight's match.

Bellarmine falls to 14-8 (3-7 GLVC) while Indianapolis improves to 11-10 (6-4 GLVC).

The Knights are back in action tomorrow taking on the Saint Joseph's Pumas, who defeated Southern Indiana tonight in straight sets.  First serve is scheduled for 4 p.m. (ET).
