CEDARVILLE, Ohio—After storming back to win the opening set 25-20, the Bellarmine Knights couldn't maintain the momentum, and the host Cedarville Yellow Jackets came back to win in four sets (20-25, 25-20, 25-13, 25-23) in an NCAA Division II non-conference contest at the Callan Athletic Center.
For the third match in a row, Bellarmine's
Margaret Horihan posted more than 20 kills chalking up 22 on the night. However, she could not keep pace with Cedarville's Abby Shelton, who swung at a .537 pace while recording 24 kills.
Bellarmine opened the match by falling behind in the early going, but rallied from a 13-8 deficit to take the first set. Again, the Knights dug a hole for themselves in the second frame and trailed 7-2 before squaring the score at 13 apiece. Bellarmine would go on build a 17-14 advantage, but the Yellow Jackets closed the set with an 11-3 run to knot the match score at 1-1.
After the break, Cedarville maintained their momentum as the Knights could not find the rhythm and dropped the third set by a count of 25-13.
In the fourth, the host Yellow Jackets maintained the upper hand for most of the set, but Bellarmine kept within striking distance. After the Knights fought off a match point, they had the chance to even the score at 24-24, but Cedarville's Krissy Pratt got her attack to land just inside the back right corner to seal the victory for the Yellow Jackets.
Horihan was the only Knight to record double digit kills while
Allie Muha tallied 43 assists and
Jordyn Kuchenbrod led the Bellarmine defense with 27 digs.
Bellarmine slips to 15-9 on the season while Cedarville improves to 17-7.
The Knights return Great Lakes Valley play this weekend as they host Drury on Friday and Missouri S&T on Saturday.
